Tough Love Tuesday: Not Asking For Help Is Holding You Back
Somewhere along the way, we all started to think that we are the all-knowing supreme leader of our businesses. That kind of thinking is going to get you nowhere fast. It's hard enough starting your own business, so we have to hype ourselves up a little bit, maybe fake it til you make it, but that is your ego telling you a story. You've reached the point in your business where you need to find a mentor or a business coach or finally hire that branding agency to help you get your business to the next level, but there is that little voice in your brain is telling you that you can do it all on your own. Your ego will give you fake confidence that you are capable of handling it all, and I'm here to tell you that you can't. Neither can I. Most people can't. There are teams behind every brand and business out there. Even the solopreneurs you follow on Instagram have mentors, coaches, graphic designers, website developers, and photographers around them that helped them get to where they are now.
Your ego is there to protect you, and it doesn't want to see you get hurt or to fail, so it tries its damnedest to keep you in a safe place. It will tell you that everything is fine as it is right now. It says you will figure it out on your own and you don't need anyone's help. It will try to convince you that you're better off just saving the money and that you don't need the help. It is possible being overly confident in the wrong places. A genuinely confident, self-assured person will know when it's time to reach out and ask for help.
So how do you get over it and ask for help?
Admitting it is the first step
Like I said above, everyone has someone else there helping them. No man is an island. Every successful business has multiple hands making sure that it stays successful. There is no shame in admitting that it's time to ask for help. The longer you let that fake confidence remain in control, the faster your business will be going nowhere. You're going to start avoiding certain tasks in your business that could help it grow because it's too stressful to acknowledge. You know you can't handle it on your own, so you are just going to ignore it until your business gets to a place of no return. Telling yourself that you're ready for help is going to lift that weight off your shoulders, and you'll be in the right mindset to receive the help that you need.
Know precisely what you need help with
If you're completely lost, then you might need to talk to fellow business owners in your space and asked them who they worked with when they were at the point of overwhelm. They could help lead you in the right direction of either hiring a business coach, or looking for a mentor, or a creative agency. Once you have a clear idea of the places where you need help, you are ready to bring on reinforcements. For example, after talking with a fellow entrepreneur, you realize you need to clarify your messaging and update your imagery online. That's where a creative agency can come in to help you. The Branding Edit exists because we know that as a small business owner, you are so deep in other aspects of your business that the branding and marketing end up on the back burner. We're here to help you clarify the areas you need help and pick up some of the slack. Getting crystal clear on your needs will help you in the long run.
Now you have to help, what are you going to do with it?
The worst thing you can do when you find the people who are there to aid you in your business growth is to dismiss the information that they are giving you. If they give you the advice to try X and you say "Well, I tried X six months ago, and I didn't work for me," you're missing an opportunity to ask the right questions. Instead, say, "I tried X six months ago, and it didn't go so well. What do you think we could try differently knowing that those were the results that I got?" That shows that you're willing to try anything to help your business grow and the person helping you is more in line with where you have been and where you want to go. It shows that you are an active participant and excited about the help you're receiving.
The Branding Edit has created our Perceive It sessions for this instance. No matter where you are in your business, from small business owners and entrepreneurs to people who have a really cool idea, you can use us as a sounding board to figure out what are the next steps needed to make it happen. Some people need someone to talk out their thoughts to, and some people need full hands-on help. Either way, they are leaving with more than they came in with. They sought out the help they needed and left feeling more confident than they ever felt before.
