Tell Imposter Syndrome to Knock It Off
Lately, we've been having energizing conversations about passion, purpose, and branding with interesting creatives + makers who have inspirational stories and talent to share with the world. We've also noticed a common thread, and it is something that this team has dealt with at some point in the early stages of our individual businesses. We're talking about Imposter Syndrome. That voice inside who makes us question our decision to put ourselves and our work out there.
"Who do I think I am?"
"Who's going to take me seriously?"
"What makes me an expert? The industry is already saturated enough... There is no room for me."
"Ha! See? I knew my email pitch would get declined -- proves I have no idea what I'm talking about."
"My product/service/experience in this topic offers no value."
Imposter Syndrome is a b****. There's no other non-sugar-coating-way to say this. Imposter syndrome is noisy, disruptive and counterproductive. Its Wikipedia definition alone tells it all:
“A term coined in 1978 by clinical psychologists Dr. Pauline R. Clance and Suzanne A. Imes referring to high-achieving individuals marked by an inability to internalize their accomplishments and a persistent fear of being exposed as a “fraud”… Despite external evidence of their competence, those exhibiting the syndrome remain convinced that they are frauds and do not deserve the success they have achieved. Proof of success is dismissed as luck, timing, or as a result of deceiving others into thinking they are more intelligent and competent than they believe themselves to be.”
And according to Psychology Today, psychologists say that the Imposter Syndrome is most common in high achieving women, results in working harder in order to prevent people from discovering that one is an imposter, and promotes a need to be approved of.
So babes, check this out... We are high-achieving women! That sentence alone is powerful enough to tell Imposter Syndrome to knock it OFF!
Do we agree that there should be questions you should probably ask yourself before making the leap into freelancing/consultancy/entrepreneurship or transitioning into a multi-layered brand (because you have many ‘hidden’ skills)?
Yes, some questions are worth giving consideration, but at the end of the day one of the most essential ones that you should bring yourself back to is your "WHY". Why is this important to you? Why does your service/product matter?
We believe that it really comes down to the vision you hold high for yourself, your career, and your life, and the opportunities that you know deep down could unfold. Your talent, skills, and expertise (whether you've earned it from a degree or years of field experience) have merit and value. So does your personal story(ies).
Here at The Branding Edit, we've made leaps … courageous ones … scary ones … risky ones (which we’ll share in upcoming posts). Life as an entrepreneur comes with a lot of uncertainties, financial ups and downs, as well as intense moments of fulfillment. So, we remind ourselves of our WHY. Or sometimes it is our families and friends who remind us of it by taking us down memory lane; reminding us of how far we’ve come and the amazing opportunities we encountered and how much we have grown from all of these experiences.
